How can I deal with anxiety? -Gloria Copeland
Anxiety is not something you need to live with or cope with. It is something you can be totally free from as you gain increasing confidence in God’s love for you and the promises He has given you in His Word.
So where do you start? Begin by settling the fact that as a Christian you have the ability, the right and the duty to cast your cares on the Lord and place your trust in Him: “Therefore humble yourselves [demote, lower yourselves in your own estimation] under the mighty hand of God, that in due time He may exalt you. Casting the whole of your care—all your anxieties, all your worries, all your concerns, once and for all—on Him; for He cares for you affectionately, and cares about you watchfully” (1 Peter 5:6-7).
Verse 8 tells us why this stand of trust in God is so absolutely
necessary: “Be well balanced (temperate, sober of mind), be vigilant and
cautious at all times; for that enemy of yours, the devil, roams around
like a lion roaring [in fierce hunger], seeking someone to seize upon
and devour.” You never have to be that “someone” the devil is seeking to
devour when your trust and confidence is in the Lord.
Jesus has already fought the devil and taken the punishment for your sin. As you resist the devil, remaining consistently in faith, your faith will cause you to overcome and have victory. God has given you authority over the devil through the Name of Jesus. There is no reason for you to have mental anguish.
Cast down thoughts that rise up, questioning who you are in Christ. Spend some time searching God’s Word for answers concerning your right-standing with God. Develop a God-inside consciousness. “But you belong to God, my dear children….The Spirit who lives in you is greater than the spirit who lives in the world” (1 John 4:4).
A ship will ride the waves through storms and turbulent weather safely unless the turbulent weather enters in and overtakes it. Your life in Christ is the same. The anxieties, the worries and the cares of this world want to keep you under, but you can take control with the Word of God and be an overcomer (Romans 8:37)!
